A former capital of Spain, the city (called "Pucela" by its inhabitants) nonetheless boasts few architectural manifestations of its former glory. Some monuments include the unfinished cathedral, the church of Santa Maria la Antigua, the Plaza Mayor (the template for that of Madrid and of future plazas in the Spanish-speaking world), the National Sculpture Museum which includes Spain's greatest collections of polychrome wood sculptures, and the Faculty of Law of the University of Valladolid, whose facade is one of the few surviving works by the same artist who did the transparente in Toledo Cathedral. The only surviving house of Miguel de Cervantes is located in Valladolid.
Valladolid is an economic motor of the autonomía, having an especially important automobile industry.
Vallisoletanos are reputed to speak the purest Castilian of all of Spain, a reputation similar to that of Tours or Aberdeen, Scotland.

Speak!" For as he took His frame; and, ere reply, Like distant clarion feebly blown, And loud the Abbess shrieked in fear, Look at yon city cross! Upon its dull destroyer's head! - Then on its battlements they saw Strange, wild, and dimly seen - Gibber and sign, advance and fly, Discern of sound or mien. Heralds and pursuivants prepare, A summons to proclaim; As fancy-forms of midnight cloud, A wavering tinge of flame; From midmost of the spectre crowd, Whose names I now shall call, Subjects of him who sent me here, I summon one and all: That e'er hath soiled your hearts within; That e'er defiled your earthly dust - By each o'er-mastering passion's tone, When forty days are passed and gone, To answer and appear." .
