University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology or UMIST for short.
Originally a spin-off from the original Victoria University of Manchester, UMIST gained its Royal Charter in the 1950s and became an autonomous University in 1993. UMIST specialises in technical and scientific subjects, and is a major centre for research.
It is based in the centre of the City of Manchester, England.
On 5 March 2003 it was announced that UMIST and the University of Manchester are to merge in the autumn of 2004 to form the largest university in Britain.
