The Tánaiste (pronounced 'taw-nisch-ta') is the deputy prime minister of Éire or the Republic of Ireland. The office was created in the 1937 Constitution of Ireland, replacing the previous office known as Vice-President of the Executive Council that had existed in the Irish Free State Constitution.
