Syrinx

The syrinx (Greek συριγξ) is another name for the musical instrument generally known as pan pipes

In Greek mythology, Syrinx (Greek Συριγξ) was a nymph who, in an attempt to escape the affections of the Greek god Pan, was transformed into water reeds. Pan cut some of the reeds and fashioned the first set of pan pipes from them, naming them syrinx in honor of her.

The closest equivalent that birds have to the mammalian larynx is called the syrinx.

"Syrinx" is also the name of a piece of music for solo flute by Claude Debussy.

The plural of syrinx is syringes, from which the modern word syringe is derived.
