Malta is a city located in Phillips County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,120. It is the county seat of Phillips County6.

Geography

Malta is located at 48°21'20" North, 107°52'17" West (48.355496, -107.871361)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,120 people, 907 households, and 565 families residing in the city. The population density is 772.2/km² (2,006.1/mi²). There are 1,067 housing units at an average density of 388.7/km² (1,009.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.83% White, 0.05% African American, 4.67% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 907 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.6% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.
