History of Guam

On March 6, 1521 Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to discover Guam.

As a result of the Spanish-American War, Guam was ceded to the US by Spain in 1898. Captured by the Japanese in 1941, it was retaken by the US three years later. The military installations on the island are some of the most strategically important US bases in the Pacific; when Navy and Air Force bases in the Philippines were closed after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo[?], most of the forces stationed there were relocated to Guam.

When far from its polluted source, Flows in a clear and happy course; In thee, dear infant! so may end And thy pure course will then extend, Deny me not the boon I crave; And let me find a peaceful grave: And let my sins their portion have; And punish whom 'twere sin to save! MAGISTRATE. Recall the word, renounce the thought, There is to all a pardon brought, 'Tis full when found, 'tis found if sought, By tears for sin that freely flow, By thoughts on that great debt we owe, By suffering what thou canst not show, Till thou canst feel thy bosom glow, 1807 "WOMAN!" To a Woman I never addressed myself in the language of decency and was hungry or thirsty, wet or sick, they did not hesitate, like Men, contribute to my relief, that if I was dry, I drank the sweetest relish. Mr Ledyard, as quoted by Mungo Park in his travels into Africa. ---------------- Place the white man on Afric's coast, Who of their scorn to Europe boast, There, while the sterner sex disdains Woman will strive to heal his pains, Hers is warm pity's sacred glow; And bids the spring of hope re-flow, So sunk and sad his looks,"--she cries; With crisped locks and rolling eyes; .
